How Important Is Learning Meditation for a Practitioner?

Meditation practice is the fundamental skill. Regardless of the path one cultivates—be it immortality-seeking (Xian), Buddhism, Taoism, or any other method—all forms of still work (Jing Gong) are accomplished through seated meditation. For Taoists cultivating immortality, meditation primarily requires a quiet mind. One sits according to their individual circumstances, with legs crossed casually! Hands may rest on the knees with palms facing upward, be placed together in prayer, or form any Buddhist or Taoist mudra (hand seal) as desired!

It's widely known that meditation is often practiced during the Zi (子, 11 PM - 1 AM) and Wu (午, 11 AM - 1 PM) periods, primarily the Zi period. This is because we generally sit in meditation during the Zi hour, as it's the time when spiritual energy (Ling Li) is most abundant, aiding in better perception and communication! As for the duration of each sitting, it depends on the individual and their stage of cultivation, typically ranging from 40 minutes to about an hour per session!

So, Meditation is Divided into Five States. Which State Are You In Now?

**The First State of Meditation (Drowsiness)**

When most people begin meditating, they often feel sleepy. This is entirely normal, as few can remain still for extended periods without feeling drowsy! Many say, "I get sleepy as soon as I start meditating, so I can't sit through it." This is the first stage of our meditation practice. We must overcome and break through this first stage to advance to higher stages of cultivation! This stage typically lasts about a month. In other words, persisting with meditation for a month should allow you to move beyond this stage!

**The Second State of Meditation (Scorching Pain)**

The main purpose of our meditation is to calm the mind, because only after achieving mental stillness can we perceive the myriad things of the universe, sense the spiritual energy of heaven and earth, and receive the impressions given to us from above (Shàng Fāng)! We meditate precisely to communicate with the higher realms and cultivate alongside them! However, before and even after formally embarking on the path (Chū Dào), the functions of our body are not yet fully developed; our Eight Extraordinary Meridians (Qí Jīng Bā Mài), our acupoints (Xuè), and orifices (Qiào) are not yet fully opened! Therefore, after passing through the first stage, the second stage primarily focuses on activating functions and unblocking meridians during meditation! All we can do is persist in sitting. As the masters transmit energy (Fā Gōng), they may cause significant physical reactions in us!

For example: pricking pains like needles, pain in the pulses of the hands and feet, aching and distending sensations in the head, at the Third Eye (Tiān Mù) point, and at the Mysterious Pass (Xuán Guān), bodily soreness, fatigue, nausea, belching, yawning, etc.! These are all reactions caused by the masters as they clear and transmit energy through us (Tōng Gōng), experiences I believe many have had! How long this stage lasts depends on the disciple, the cultivation level of the sentient beings involved, but most crucially, on the disciple's cooperation! For instance, if the stage ends in half a month, the pain during that period might be intense; whereas if it takes a year, the pain might be less severe but spread over a longer duration. Normally, it takes one to three months to complete the cultivation of this stage.

**The Third State of Meditation (Entering Stillness - Rù Jìng)**

Entering Stillness (Rù Jìng). Only when the mind is still can we communicate effectively. Only when the mind is still can we ensure the accuracy and smooth flow of our spiritual perception/inspiration (Líng Gǎn)! Therefore, the third stage of meditation is the crucial phase of entering stillness. We must expel distracting thoughts from the depths of our heart, eliminate external disturbances, and ward off attacks by external spirits (Wài Líng)!

At the beginning, it might take over ten minutes to reach a state of complete stillness (Quán Jìng). But gradually, through our effort and meditative stability (Dìng Lì), we can enter stillness quickly.

Only practitioners who cultivate to this stage can truly set aside their own thoughts, calm their minds to sense spiritual perception, communicate with the masters, and thus ensure the accuracy of that perception.

Depending on one's cultivation, this stage will last at least 2-3 months. If one stops meditating, they will regress to their previous state.

**The Fourth State of Meditation (Stabilizing the Mind - Wěn Xīn)**

After entering stillness, during meditation, we will encounter many trials. Sometimes they appear as frightening visages, other times as wondrous illusions. These are actually images projected by sentient beings. Only with unwavering faith, like Mount Tai standing firm even if it were to collapse before you, can one pass through! That is to say, when your mind is quiet, you might see unusual things, perhaps even deities or Buddhas. But these are merely illusions; do not pay them heed. Continue meditating calmly! No external thoughts, images, or sounds should shake your conviction.

What should we do when encountering things we cannot subdue? The answer lies in one word: "Steady" (Wěn). As long as you remain steady, an impression will arise in the moment, telling you how to handle the situation. Therefore, stabilizing the mind is the most crucial stage for advancing towards genuine cultivation. This stage lasts at least 1-2 months.

**The Fifth State of Meditation (Entering Samadhi - Rù Dìng)**

The final stage of meditation is entering Samadhi (Rù Dìng), sought after by high monks and great virtuous individuals alike! After entering Samadhi, all things of the world become irrelevant; one roams freely between heaven and earth! True Samadhi means the soul leaves the body! This is what we commonly call the "out-of-body experience of the Primordial Spirit" (Yuán Shén Chū Qiào)!

First, we must enter a state of self-forgetfulness, transforming into the midst of heaven and earth. All things are me, and I am all things! One feels like a giant magnetic field, drawing the Qi of Yin and Yang into the body! At this point, our Primordial Spirit (Yuán Shén) gradually strengthens. After entering Samadhi, one may go up or down, handle affairs, or trace past lives—all within the Samadhi state. And these spiritual powers likewise become integrated into ourselves.
